Compartments
This installation was a project conducted in the historic Jaques Building near the Purdue University campus in West Lafayette, IN. A group of Graduate Student artists were giving the project of creating an installation responding to the space and the history of the space. I chose to respond to the potential future of the space and the removal of the history and function of that space by creating a large artificially lit segmented installation in the open space that had once served as a space for social gatherings such as Cotillion, dance recitals, and church gatherings. So many historic spaces are robbed of thier original qualities through "renovations" that "modernize" the space. The installation was arbitraily placeed in front of the original windows and given small segmented spaces with low ceilings. The installation was created from modern building materials such as sheet rock, latex paint, and plastics. The spaces were also givien window like artificial light sources that did not rely on the natural llight sources from the building. |
